How to turn your bedroom light into a dawn clock, and simulate sunrise indoors.
I can’t use a light switch and want to be woken up nicely each morning.
Using LIFX and IFTTT, we can accomplish both of these things.
I’ve added a lot to this first step, that’s because they are all very simple and essentially just setting up the app. So, buy some LIFX lightbulbs and download the LIFX App to your mobile. You next need to set up your LIFX lightbulbs and connect them to the LIFX Cloud account you set up in the LIFX app, and finally you need to grab yourself an If This Then That (IFTTT) acount.
With your new IFTTT account, go to the LIFX Channel and run through the connection process. You will need your LIFX Cloud login for this.
Now that everything is set up, the fun can begin: let’s make a new applet. We’ll bring the sunrise inside!
From the IFTTT homepage click on your username in the top right hand corner of the screen and select the words New Applet. You will be directed to the next set up page.
Look for “If This Then That” with the word this highlighted; click on this. You will be asked to choose a service; use the search box and type the word “Weather”. Click on the Weather Channel icon when it appears.
We’ve chosen the service, now we need to choose to trigger. Choose the Sunrise option. You might have to scroll down a bit to find it.
If This Then That appears again. This time the word that will be highlighted so go ahead and click it. Another search box should appear. Type LIFX and select the LIFX Channel icon that shows up.
On the next page, select the “change color of lights” option. This is how we tell the LIFX lightbulbs what to do at sunrise.
On the next page there are five options that we care about:
- Which lights? ** = House - Bedroom
- Color * = Cool White
- Brightness * = 100%
- Turn on first? * = Yes
- Transition duration * = 30 Minutes
- Advanced Options = (leave this one blank)
Note that the name House is the name I gave to my whole group of lightbulbs. My first option is targeting the lightbulb named Bedroom inside the group House. If you only have one bulb you can ignore groups.
When you’re done click “Create action”. This will take you to another page where you can click “Finish”.
And that’s it, you’re done! You should now be woken up each sunrise by the lights in your bedroom slowly going from darkness to simulated daylight and gently waking you up. It’s a very nice way to start the day. :-)
To make it a little easier for you, here’s a link to the recipe I just made and all you have to do is turn it on and modify it to your needs. Aren’t I nice?!
